Dermabrasion PDF Print E-mail

Description
Dermabrasion is a surgical procedure used to improve the look of scarred or sun-damaged skin. It is frequently used to treat acne and chicken pox scars or to erase wrinkles and to correct pigmentation problems.

How It's Done
Before the procedure, the skin to be treated is frozen using a Freon spray. Surface layers of dead skin are then scraped away using abrasive sandpaper with rotating wire brushes, or a burr containing diamond particles, so that newer, smoother skin can grow back. The patient usually applies an ointment, such as Retin-A, in the weeks before the procedure.

Length of Procedure
15 minutes to 1 hour.

Results
Most patients experience a 50 percent or better improvement in the skin within 18 months but outcome depends on your skin type, coloring, and medical history.

Recovery
The recovery time is usually 7-10 days during which time the skin may feel sensitive and tingly with some burning and swelling. Patients are advised to avoid using make-up and to stay away from sun exposure for six to twelve months.

Side Effects / Risks
Possibility of allergies, scaring, and infections in the refinished areas of the skin. Some patients develop excessive scar tissue but this can usually be resolved using a steroidal injection. Ethnicities with dark complexions, including African-Americans, Asians, Hispanics, may become blotchy.
